AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that it had already been pre-determined how much he would play against Genoa, but he had ‘a lot of fun’.

The Rossoneri got themselves back in the win column at the Marassi on Wednesday night and Ibrahimovic opened the scoring with an exceptional free-kick from 25 yards out. A Junior Messias double either side of half-time completed the scoring as Milan took advantage of Napoli’s draw to close the gap back to one point.

Ibrahimovic spoke to Sky Italia after the game and he revealed that the team feel like they are ‘back on top’ after the win and the clean sheet, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“I have a lot of fun. Today it was already decided before the game how much I had to play and I did the best I could. These guys make me have fun and make me feel young,” he said.

“In the last two games we made mistakes that cost us the result, the opponents weren’t good but we made mistakes. The championship is still long, today we won and we’re back on top.”

Ibrahimovic was asked if he thought that he could bring Milan back to these levels having returned during the 2019-20 season when the team were simply battling for a Europa League place.

“Yes, I imagined to bring Milan back to these levels. This was my vision and my challenge when I signed. We must not give up and think that it is possible.”

On the renewal of Pioli, he added: “Now I have to renew too (laughs). If Pioli renews, I renew. I’m happy for him that he deserves it, he is doing a great job and must continue like this. The renewal is deserved.”

The hope is that the recent blip is behind the team now and they can kick on until the Christmas break. When asked about the Scudetto dream that some fans harbour, Ibrahimovic admitted that the team have done nothing until a trophy is won.

“I am happy for the fans, for many years they have not enjoyed as they are enjoying now. I hope we can restore that happiness to the fans but until you win a trophy we have not done anything.”
