Ian Maatsen should stay at Chelsea as Ben Chilwell’s backup | OneFootball

The Sun have today reported that Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen is a target for Dortmund.

The left back has come through the academy at Stamford Bridge and really impressed on loan at Coventry this season, winning the club’s young player of the season award.

The natural progression is now for him to step up to the first team. Marcos Alonso looks likely to leave the club, and that opens up the backup role behind Ben Chilwell for Maatsen.

He wouldn’t play nearly as often as he did in the Championship this season, but Chelsea can still offer him a minimum of ten or so starts as a rotation option, and if this year has proved anything it’s that the backup in any position is just one injury away from becoming first choice – as we saw when Chilwell was ruled out for the season back in November.
