Mikel Arteta has defended his trophy record as Arsenal manager by reminding reporters he has in fact won THREE trophies since joining the Gunners.
Arsenal have been heavily scrutinised by failing to take advantage of Liverpool and Manchester City’s recent slip ups in the Premier League, with Arteta’s men six points adrift at the top.
The Carabao Cup represents a great opportunity for Arteta to end his barren run but the Arsenal boss was in a playful mood at today’s press conference, as he flexed his two Charity Shield triumphs alongside his FA Cup success in 2020.
When asked about winning just one trophy in his five years at the club, Arteta responded: “The Charity Shield as well twice, no?”
“So it’s three [trophies]. We need more. We want more and we want the big ones as well.
“The pressure comes because we are at a big club. You want to do the best that you possibly can and that’s related to winning the major trophies and this is what we want to do.”
Arsenal face Crystal Palace at the Emirates tomorrow in their quarter final and Arteta is hopeful of following in Jose Mourinho’s footsteps by using the Carabao Cup as a springboard for more success.
“I think it’s a really helpful. It brings belief, trust and positive energy,” Arteta continued.
“Touching a cup and being in a semi final, beating somebody in the final, it generates energy.
“It creates the right path to go on and do something else. Especially because of the timing and when the competition is played in this country.
“It definitely gets the momentum going.”
