Neal Maupay (28) addressed his Everton FC exit in his first press conference as an Olympique de Marseille player.
It was clear that there was little love between Maupay and the English club as the striker neared an exit over the summer. Maupay had struggled to adjust to life in Everton, scoring only once since making the move from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022. The day before his loan move (which has an obligation to buy) was confirmed the striker poked the beehive on his social media.
In reply to a Fabrizio Romano tweet announcing that a deal had been agreed between Marseille and Everton, the striker posted a clip from The Shawshank Redemption, where the main character Andy Dufresne breaks free from prison. The allusion was clear and some of the replies to his post were vociferous.
Today Maupay was willing to explain why he posted the video in his first press conference for Marseille, “Supporters like to discuss, criticise, and celebrate and it doesn’t bother me because I consider myself a normal person and if everyone can tweet I can do it too.”
“I published a funny little video because my situation at Everton was known, I wanted to leave and the club didn’t want to keep me. So this little video was to say that I was relieved to leave the club,” Maupay concluded.
