Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has insisted that he was certain that his Southampton counterpart Russell Martin was destined for management since he managed him at Norwich City.

Farke and Martin are set to clash at Wembley this weekend as Leeds and Southampton fight for a place in the Premier League next season.

The German has experience of earning promotion from the Championship when he got Norwich to the Premier League almost a decade back.

Farke stressed the importance of Martin in that Norwich team as he was his club captain and he learned a lot from him in his first job in English football.

The Leeds boss conceded that he was lucky to have the current Southampton boss in his team as he was a real leader and the way he understood the game showed that he was destined for management at the end of his playing career.

Farke said in a press conference when asked about Martin: “I was quite blessed when I had him at Norwich. He was my captain.

“My first steps in English football, inexperienced coach, Russell in the later stages of his career, especially in the first weeks got a lot of information because of him.

“Could tell he would become a manager.

“He judged the games and everything that happened around the pitch, the dressing room, with the eyes of a manager.

“I was sure he’d do a good job in this business as a manager.

“As a captain, he was a leader of men, the way he led the group, I sensed many skills if you want to lead a group as a manager.

“There was no doubt after his playing career, he’d become a manager, I was quite sure. He’s a great person.

“Right now, he’s proving me right, we have our experience from Norwich.”

Martin will hope to trump his former manager at Wembley and get Southampton promoted to the Premier League on Sunday.
