Arsenal are 15 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race. The Gunners look poised to finish second place for the third consecutive season.
Arsenal were supposed to give Manchester City a run for their money, but the champions dropped out of the race due to their inconsistency, leaving the Gunners and Liverpool to duel it out.
Mikel Arteta’s side were only four points behind the Reds last month and were ready to close the gap, but poor results against West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United have left them trailing.
Arsenal now have 10 games to try and close the distance, but it is seemingly impossible against a rampant Liverpool side that has only lost once this season.
Controversial Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher said he does not believe Arsenal can get better under Arteta.
“Arsenal were a better team last season, I’ve said that before,” Carragher told Sky Sports Monday Night Football. “This idea that they would have won the league this season, I’m not so sure.
“I mean, they got 89 points last season, Arsenal. If we’re judging on that, I think Liverpool will get over 89 points. Liverpool have only lost once, and I think Arsenal had lost more than once by this stage of the season.
“I do feel, and I have been saying for a long time, that we’ve seen peak Arsenal under Mikel Arteta.”
Carragher’s peak Arsenal claim ignores crucial context. Yes, their current form is poor, but strategic signings change everything.
A prolific striker solves their goal-scoring woes. Wing reinforcements add dynamism, and a robust midfield provides stability. His focus on current points ignores potential.
Arsenal’s struggles stem from squad depth, not inherent inability. With the right acquisitions, they can surpass current limitations. To say Arsenal have peaked is a narrow, short-sighted assessment.
