Ryan Mason gives positive update on Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier after recent surgery

Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason is hopeful that Eric Dier recovers in time to participate in the club’s pre-season this summer.

The club have planned an Asia-Pacific tour before the start of next season and fans would want first-team players to participate and be available during this period. It often sets the tone for the season that follows.

“We can confirm that Eric Dier has undergone groin surgery this week and will, therefore, be unavailable for our final game of the season, away to Leeds United on Sunday afternoon. The defender will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff before joining up with the squad ahead of the start of pre-season.”

Dier back for the new season

At his latest pre-match press conference, Mason was asked if the England international will return in time for pre-season. He said, via Football.London:

“I think so – the hope and expectation is that will be the case, and I guess that’s why the operation took place so quickly.”

That’s good news. He will, of course, miss our Premier League game against Leeds United at Elland Road tomorrow. Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga are our other centre-backs.

The game tomorrow carries importance and Dier’s experience could have helped. We are eighth in the table, trailing Aston Villa by one point and leading Brentford by the same margin.

A spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League is up for grabs. It’s a competition not every Spurs fan would want to see the team play in, but it is what it is.

Hopefully, we sign a world-class centre-back this summer to partner Romero, possibly as an upgrade on Dier, who isn’t always consistent with his displays in central defence. But it can’t be denied that the 29-year-old continues to add important depth and quality to our backline and should not be sold this summer.
