It was the perfect finish for Manchester United last night as Alessia Russo’s late goal helped The Red Devils to end Arsenal’s unbeaten run with a 3-2 success at the Emirates Stadium.

It was a goal that sent head coach Marc Skinner crazy on the touchline, he got into the groove as he celebrated the match-winning moment with a memorable jig. Russo’s winner came after two great saves from Arsenal keeper Manuela Zinsberger had left Skinner and his staff with their heads in their hands.

“That’s the beauty of football,” Skinner said when speaking in the post-match press conference. “I spun around that many times I felt dizzy.

“If Arsenal would have scored that way, they would have been exactly the same. I’ve been on the other end of those results but tonight, I’m actually going to sit and be happy about that because we deserved that.”

From the first whistle, Skinner’s side proved to be more organised in their roles on the pitch and when creating chances, which allowed them to come up with the magic moments that they did.

When speaking about his side’s resilience, Skinner said “I felt that we had more control of the game. For us to give what we gave when we were winning and then to go behind, it would’ve been easy for us to give up.

“For all the organisation, all the structures, we’re asking us to show our personality and that for me is the most exciting.”

Skinner gave praise to plenty of his squad with Katie Zelem’s set piece threat playing a vital role in the victory.

He said “I think she’s one of the best I’ve ever seen at doing it, she just knows how to find that detail.

“Obviously, she’s my captain so I’m a huge fan of what she does but you don’t see all the things she does. We see those two magnificent parts but our players know that; they know she’s going to put it where we need it to be and in those big moments, I think her psyche is built for that.”

Manchester United are well-known for their set piece expertise with two of their three goals last night being headers from corners. Skinner has been pleased with the threats that his players have provided this season from a range of deliveries into the box.

“We always prepare for set pieces and we know we’re good at them,” Skinner said. “Our deliveries are unbelievable and we have the aeriel ability, not only in the starting line-up but being able to bring those sort of players off the bench.

“We needed various ways of scoring after last season and so now we have players that can be threats from loads of different angles.”

Manchester United’s victory meant that they put an end to Arsenal’s record 14-game unbeaten run in the Barclays Women’s Super League, making the win that bit more special.

“It’s the longest winning run because of the team they are so it’s even more credit to us for beating them,” Skinner said. “I think the game was a great spectacle for the WSL.”

Manchester United will now turn their attentions towards an Old Trafford date against Aston Villa on Saturday 3 December.
