Chelsea were without key midfielder N’Golo Kante on Saturday afternoon and they still managed to humiliate Norwich City in a 7-0 win.

They were also without Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner of course, who both came off injured against Malmo in the week.

Now Chelsea are getting ready for another busy week of football with the EFL cup coming up this week. The Blues welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

There will probably be rests for some key players ahead of another match in the Premier League on Saturday against Newcastle.

Thomas Tuchel has been speaking to the Chelsea website about why Kante missed the game against Norwich this Saturday, and the German coach is wisely being very cautious with the French international.

Not only that though, he has issued a fitness update on the experienced midfielder ahead of both these matches coming up this week.

He said:

“The game was too early. He [Kante] did the full training on Friday and after training, he said he feels his muscles a bit tight.

“He went to the physios for massages and for some treatment and he actually wanted to wait until Saturday in the morning to take the decision. I said no, it’s such an early game tomorrow, the possibility that it will change is not so high.

“I said take your time and it was simply one day too early. If the match would have been on Sunday he would have played. So he is fully available for Tuesday and for Newcastle.”
