Chelsea only offer long year deals to players over 30, and they didn’t even bend that for John Terry.

So Willian’s persistence in trying to force the club to give him a 3 year deal was extremely misguided, especially as he was around to see Terry – and plenty of other older players – go.

Speaking to UOL in Brazil, the winger discussed his departure from Stamford Bridge, and how difficult it had been for him.

“I really wanted to stay,” he explained.

“It was difficult to make that decision… We ended up not finding an agreement, I ended up asking for three years, Chelsea wanted to give two, and everyone knows this story. That’s why I ended up leaving.”

He’s struggling at Arsenal since joining. He’s not got a goal for his new club, and Mikel Arteta has used him less and less since December. It looks increasingly like Chelsea got out at the right time – far too late, some Blues fans would say, in fact.

It’s too late now, and there’s no denying he gave the club great service, even if a lot of supporters wanted a fresh start with a new player in the end.

But be careful what you wish for – is Christian Pulisic that much of an upgrade? When he’s actually fit enough to get on the pitch, that is…
