‘I play every day like Sarina is watching’ – Chelsea’s Beever-Jones discusses England prospects

Chelsea forward Aggie Beever-Jones says that she plays every single day as if England head coach Sarina Wiegman is watching on.

The 20-year-old is still awaiting her first senior Lionesses call-up, however, she is thought to be on national team boss Wiegman’s radar following her excellent start to the new season with Chelsea.

Beever-Jones has continued her development on loan with Bristol City and Everton in the last couple of years and she has started the current campaign back at Chelsea by netting five goals in six Barclays Women’s Super League outings.

When speaking about her international prospects in an England media session, Beever-Jones said that her approach is to just play every day like she is being watched by Wiegman.

“I’m at the age now where I play every day like Sarina is watching,” Beever-Jones said. “Her scouts are probably everywhere and at every game.

“They’re always watching because you can see that Grace (Clinton) and Khi (Khiara Keating) have been called up and we’re in the same age group.

“Every day, I am trying to better myself and keep in mind the fact that they are constantly watching.”

Many thought that Beever-Jones would receive her first senior call-up for England’s December internationals. That wasn’t to be but the player is continuing to keep her head down and work hard.

She said “For me, it is about controlling what I can control. I can’t control the selections; who gets picked and who doesn’t. I just keep using it as a motivator to keep pushing because ultimately, that’s where I want to get to.

“As a young player, sometimes you want things quite quickly but I’ve still got a long way to go in my career. I just want to keep improving on what I’ve been doing and what I’ve got to build on from what Sarina has said and what Emma has said at club. I need to unite the two and continue to perform consistently.”

The huge impact that Beever-Jones has made at Chelsea this season maybe comes as a bit of a surprise. The player herself admits that she didn’t expect as much game time but she is thankful to manager Emma Hayes and her assistant Denise Reddy.

“If I’m being honest, I’d probably say no (I didn’t expect so much game time),” the forward said. “Being a young player and coming back from being out on loan….that Chelsea environment is a world-class environment but I just came back in and was like a sponge, absorbing as much information as I could.

“Emma and Denise put their trust in me a few times to come on and I got that start at Stamford Bridge (against Liverpool) which was an immensely proud moment for myself and my family. A lot of credit must go to the coaches for helping me to get where I am today. It’s great that this is all happening but I want to just kick on, focus on my performances and keep scoring goals. Hopefully, I can continue to help the team the best that I can.”

Beever-Jones is expected to pull on an England Under-23 shirt this evening when The Young Lionesses face Spain at The Pirelli Stadium in Burton upon Trent. Tickets for the match are on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
