I have found myself agreeing with Michael Owen.
They say there is always a first time for everything.
Well, this is mine with Michael Owen.
As he talks about the current situation with England, as they look to appoint a successor to Gareth Southgate, following his resignation after eight years and 102 games in charge of the national side.
Michael Owen commenting on Eddie Howe and the England situation:
“I would love Eddie Howe as England manager but he’s already in a top job.
“I’d be right behind The FA appointing Graham Potter too.
“Whatever we do, I’m of the opinion that the England manager should be English.”
I absolutely agree with our old mate Michael Owen, on this occasion anyway.
Eddie Howe is of course by far the best person for the England job.
However, as Michael Owen rightly points out, Eddie Howe is already in a top job at Newcastle United, and zero chance of him leaving it for England.
Again, in the absence of Eddie Howe willing to take the job, I totally agree with Michael Owen that Graham Potter is the next most obvious candidate, assuming the FA go for an English manager.
After all, who else is there?
Of those still in work in the Premier League, you have Sean Dyche and Gary O’Neil.
Whilst when it comes to those out of work (as well as Graham Potter), the idea of Frank Lampard getting the job is horrendous. That is, unless you are a Scotland fan!
Gareth Southgate was a total failure in club management and after his sacking at Middlesbrough in 2009 gave up on the idea.
He then became part of the England set-up and was given the Under 21s job in 2013, the FA then promoting Southgate from within to the senior England post. So no surprise if the current England Under 21s boss, Lee Carsley gets the job this time. He has done a far better job with the Under 21s than Southgate, winning last summer’s (Under 21s) Euros, plus he has never (as yet) been a total failure in club management, as was the case with Gareth Southgate.
All of a bit of a mess really as surely Gareth Southgate should have made clear his position before these 2024 Euros AND the FA then having somebody lined up to take the job.
