Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has reacted after his side needed penalties to knock Southampton out of the Carabao Cup.

It was the second match in a row in the League Cup where his team had needed penalties to go though to the next round, and it was the second game in a row against Premier League opposition.

Tuchel put out a very second string starting line up last night, but he says that was partly due to injuries, with N’Golo Kante, Andreas Christensen, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, and Romelu Lukaku all being on the injury list.

But for me, I think there was a number of poor individual performances from some of the fringe guys last night, and Chelsea really struggled to keep possession.

However, Tuchel has stayed away from any critique and actually says he was very ‘pleased’ with the performance last night.

The game was emphatic and end to end, I’ll give him that!

As reported by Sports Illustrated, Tuchel said:

“It was an intense match of football, nice to watch for the spectators. It was an open fight, an intense match. We did a good shootout, a lot of quality. Kepa saved one, it was a miss too. There were a lot of changes. Unfortunately yesterday we lost Azpi with an injury, Andreas told us he could not play because he had tooth surgery and then Ruben. We missed three players that maybe would have started. I liked the energy today, it was a good game.”
