The Owls have been dented by various absences in recent weeks, with key duo Yan Valery and Stuart Armstrong the latest pair to sit out the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland last Friday evening, after sustaining calf injuries.

Calf issues have continued to plague the Yorkshire outfit, with Ryo Hatsuse reporting a similar problem after the meeting with the Black Cats.

Sheffield Wednesday’s latest disappointment in the Championship was a third successive defeat and a fourth loss in five matches, leaving the Owls 13th in the table and seven points off a play-off place with just 11 games remaining of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday will have to produce a strong and consistent run of form between now and May in order to gatecrash the top six, with a hefty number of injuries making that task a lot harder than it normally would be.

As reported by the Sheffield Star, Yan Valery and Stuart Armstrong aren’t expected to be out for a prolonged period of time, while there is hope Ryo Hatsuse will be available for next weekend’s trip to relegation-threatened Plymouth Argyle.

Reflecting on the injury concerns, Rohl said: “They have calf problems.

“I know the reason why, but I will not speak about this reason. There is something that we know about that is causing these calf problems at the moment, but this is football. We had a team on the pitch today that fought for everything, and this was good to see. There are things we have to improve late in the game.”

The report also states that previous Wednesday managers have raised concerns over the playing surfaces at the club’s training ground in particular, while Rohl himself has mentioned the recent heaviness of the Hillsborough pitch as an issue that has caused some of his players to cramp up in recent weeks.

The squad were reportedly forced to train on the stadium pitch for much of January with the training pitches rendered out of action due to inclement weather.

If Sheffield Wednesday are to make a late storm for the play-offs, then they will need to keep the majority of their first-team squad fit to achieve this aim.

Injuries to experienced Championship professionals like Yan Valery and Stuart Armstrong are far from ideal, with the Owls desperately needing their knowledge of this division to earn crucial points and rise up the table.
