Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster has claimed Chelsea lack a little bit of belief when they play games against the top sides.

The Blues have made a good start to the season and sit third in the league, although it’s very tight with only four points separating third and thirteenth.

Despite being in a good league position the Blues have only won one of their last five league matches, but do face a more favourable run after the international break.

Foster claims Chelsea lack belief in the big games

Chelsea have exceeded people’s expectations so far this season, but the one thing that’s missing is a statement win in a big game, although Enzo Maresca insists he’s been happy with his team’s performances.

The Blues have recorded some impressive victories against the likes of Brighton, Wolves and Newcastle but haven’t been able to beat one of the traditional big six sides yet.

Maresca’s men have had four attempts this season against Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, and although they have only lost one of those, they haven’t won any.

Chelsea are yet to record a win this season against a traditional big side.

There’s no doubt Chelsea and their young team are progressing, but a statement win is the next step that needs to be taken, with Maresca recently admitting that big price tags could hold his young players back.

It does feel like a big win is coming, but former United keeper Foster feels the Blues lack a bit of belief going into these big games.

“I just feel they [Chelsea] lack a little bit of belief going into these big games,” he said as cited on X.com.

“When they play the big boys, I feel they go into it thinking don’t lose. Maybe that’s a progression thing.”

It’s hard to disagree with Foster as the Blues should have beaten United at Old Trafford, but this isn’t a new thing this season, it’s something that stretched back to last season as well.

If the Blues want to challenge for the title and win it again, which absolutely must be the aim then their record against the big sides needs to drastically improve.
