Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence has hinted towards potentially remaining at Genoa permanently following the conclusion of his loan.

Ange Postecoglou has not given the right-back a look in since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last summer.

And having joined the Serie A outfit in the January window, Spence has already spoken out about his future in N17.

Spence opens door to Tottenham exit

It has not exactly been the big-time move which Spence will have hoped for having joined the club back in 2022 from Middlesbrough.

From minute one, it was apparent all was not right with this transfer with Antonio Conte telling the press that Spence was a ‘club signing‘.

It now seems as if Spence is keeping the door open to the possibility of remaining in Italy with Genoa, as he told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I knew they had already been looking for me last summer. Now, the right conditions were evidently there to close the operation. I’m satisfied. It’s an important opportunity. I hope that this can be the beginning of a long journey in a club that is growing.

“I found a nice team and a pleasant city. I settled in quickly. They supported me in everything. Everyone in the locker room has helped. There’s a nice atmosphere here. Soon I will start studying Italian. For now, I preferred to concentrate on football.”

Strength in depth at right-back

It could be argued that right-back is one of our strongest positions now with Pedro Porro and Emerson Royal at the club.

Porro has been a revelation since landing last January and has already been able to rack up eight assists in the Premier League alone this season.

Although Royal may not provide the same attacking output, the Brazilian has demonstrated his defensive ability in covering at centre-back over the winter period.

So it is difficult to see where Postecoglou could make room for Spence in the side, despite the high praise directed his way in the past with Ian Wright labelling him ‘unbelievable’.

His loan spell with Leeds United was cut short earlier in the season and there seems to be major question marks about his attitude.

It is proving to be a poor move from Spurs, but perhaps it could be time to cut our losses in the summer and cut ties with the 23-year-old.
