England captain Millie Bright says that reaching the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 final is a dream come true and that the team are proud of their achievements so far.

The Lionesses face Spain in the showpiece in Sydney tomorrow. Both nations are bidding to become world champions for the very first time.

As a girl, Bright could only dream of captaining England in a FIFA Women’s World Cup final but tomorrow will see that dream become reality. The defender says that the team are proud of what they have achieved in Australia this summer.

“I guess dreams come true,” Bright said. “It is just a really proud moment.

“As a squad, we are just really proud of our journey, how far we have come throughout the tournament and for finally getting a shot at winning the trophy that we have always wanted.”

Very few gave England a chance of reaching the final before a ball was kicked at the start of the tournament. The squad was weakened by injuries to Beth Mead, Leah Williamson and Fran Kirby while the Lionesses have faced further challenges during the tournament. Bright went on to hail the mentality and adaptability within the squad which has helped them to defy the odds.

“It’s difficult but it is football. As a player, you understand that at any given time, something could pop up and things could change. Football is never a given and while we would love everyone to be here, it has been a great opportunity for other people to come in and step up.

“Again, we have shown how adaptable we are and we are really blessed as a nation to have such a big pool of players to choose from and so much talent. That shows the growth of the game.

“It’s down to mentality and the culture that we have in the England set up, it’s unbelievable. To have that mentality to adapt to change, it’s football.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 final between Spain and England kicks-off at 11am tomorrow morning.
