Charlton Athletic’s 2020/21 season reached a frustrating conclusion, with the Addicks narrowly missing out on a top-six finish in League One.

Some inconsistent results during this year’s campaign saw Nigel Adkins’ side relying on other results to force themselves into the play-off positions in the third-tier.

The Addicks did their part on the final day of the season, as they beat League One winners Hull City by a goal to nil at The Valley, but that wasn’t quite enough to see them finish in the last remaining play-off spot.

Oxford United pipped Charlton to sixth-place in the table, as they thrashed Burton Albion 4-0 at the Kassam Stadium, and they’ll be hoping they can win promotion into the Championship via the play-offs this term.

But for Charlton, they’ll now be switching their attention to the 2021/22 campaign, where they’ll be eager to return to the second-tier under Adkins’ management.

One player that played his part for the club in the first-half of this year’s campaign was Alfie Doughty, with the midfielder making ten appearances for the Addicks.

But his good form didn’t go unnoticed, as he earned a move to Championship side Stoke City in the January transfer window. But he is yet to make an appearance for the Potters, due to be ruled out of action through injury.

The Potters finished 14th in the Championship table, and Doughty has already set his sights on making an impact with his new club next season, in a recent post on his Instagram page, and labelled it as a move that he wanted.

Did these 18 players make more than 100 appearances for Stoke City or not?

The Verdict:

He’ll be eager to make up for lost time with Stoke City next season.

I was really impressed with Doughty whilst he was with Charlton Athletic, and I think he was more than deserving of a move to a club in the second-tier, so his transfer to Stoke made sense at the time.

But with injuries keeping him sidelined at this moment in time, he’ll be hoping he can recapture his best run of form as soon as he’s declared fit enough to feature for the Championship side next term.

If he can do that, then I seriously wouldn’t be surprised to see Stoke City challenging for a top-six finish in the second-tier next season under the management of Michael O’Neill.
