Ruben Amorim paid tribute to Manchester United’s improvements after their resilience was rewarded with a penalty shootout victory over Arsenal to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

United were forced to play nearly an hour with 10 men after Diogo Dalot was sent off for two yellow cards but they withstood Arsenal’s onslaught to navigate through extra time, before Joshua Zirkzee’s winning spot kick.

“I felt that, from the very first minute, today was our day,” Amorim said post match.

“I felt a connection with the fans and the staff. A very good day for us in that aspect, but we need to play better football.

“I think we played, especially in the first half, better in the first game [against Arsenal]. Today, we did well in set pieces.

“We managed to score, and in that moment I felt that we were able to improve, but the sending off was really hard on us.”

Captain Bruno Fernandes added: “Obviously the circumstances of the game we played with one less we suffered a lot but we sacrificed a lot as a team and at the end you get this.

“I know we want to celebrate and everything but our focus is now Southampton, that is when we have to back it up. The big games against Liverpool, Arsenal, everyone steps up because it’s a big game.

“You want to be in these kinds of games, you want to be involved, you want to be the best but we have to do it in Old Trafford with these fans again. We have to give it back for the club. We need to do it every week, every game.”
