After last season’s play-off defeat, it was imperative that Sheffield Wednesday started the 2022/23 campaign well.

A slow start last season cost them dearly in the end, but this time around, they are having no such problems.

Indeed, the Owls currently sit 3rd in League One with 18 matches played, one point behind 2nd placed Ipswich Town and three behind league leaders Plymouth Argyle.

With the above in mind, and the halfway point of the season fast approaching, we asked FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Callum Maxted for his verdict on whether or not he was happy with the job currently being done by Owls boss Darren Moore.

“Darren Moore for me has been absolutely perfect I think so far.” Callum told FLW.

“The way that the club was going when he came in was a downward spiral. I could only see us going one way and that was further down the leagues. He came in and changed everything.

“He’s changed the mentality, the players work for each other. It’s good football. He doesn’t get everything right, but no manager does at our level.

“So, you’re getting draws against teams that you should be winning [against] and stuff, but that’s that’s been improved upon this season than it was to compared to last season.

“We’ve stepped up the quality this season compared to last season when we were in the playoffs and I think this season, we could go one further.

“For me it’s it’s important that we do go one further, but, I can say that he’s getting the club going the right way.

“Some people don’t agree that he should be there, but I’ve only seen positive things and and I can’t really fault him to be honest.”

“The only thing I can fault him on occasionally is the substitutions, but we have the quality in the team to be able to deal with the pressure of being in the league this season compared to last season and I think that’s that’s only gonna make us better as a team.

“I think that unity that he’s brought, and the whole togetherness of the club, I feel more attached to the club now than ever since he’s come in than I ever have.

“Within that relegation season especially I felt very very detached from my club and he’s come in and made sure that everyone’s in it together”

The Verdict

I think our fan pundit’s words here speak for themselves – it’s quite a glowing verdict of Darren Moore.

But, rightly so, as I do believe the Owls boss is doing a good job at the moment.

I think certain criticisms last season were valid, but this campaign, the Owls look very strong contenders for automatic promotion.

Indeed, if they do not go up in the top two, it will likely be because of how good Plymouth and Ipswich have been rather than their own ‘failure’.

All in all the 48-year-old is going well at the moment, and with the halfway stage of the season approaching, Sheffield Wednesday fans will surely be happy with where their club are currently positioned.
