FC Barcelona made their way into the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 last night with a memorable win over Benfica in the League Phase of the competition.
The Catalans found themselves down by two goals at half-time with a 3-1 scoreline. However, they stepped up their game in the second half and got their rewards by completing a comeback in the very final seconds of the game as Raphinha scored his side’s fifth goal in the 6th minute of injury time to end the game 4-5.
Although the match ultimately ended well for the Blaugranes, one player who would still have left the pitch unsatisfied would definitely have been the goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, as he conceded four goals on the night.
Hansi Flick did not hold the Pole alone responsible for the four goals conceded and also highlighted the vital contributions he made later in the game. Similarly, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, the goalkeeper himself talked to the media after the match to share his feelings.
The Polish veteran did not want to remain obsessed with the mistakes he made in this game and was already looking forward to the challenges ahead:
“I don’t want to look back because there’s still a long way to go in the Champions League. There are fantastic teams, and we must be at our best if we want to be competitive.”
The goalkeeper also opened up on his move to Barcelona after he had already retired last summer “These last six months have been quite a challenge for me, but I can say that I’m very happy with the decision to come to Barcelona.”
It was quite a surprise to see Wojciech Szczęsny starting the game ahead of Inaki Pena last night, and despite his comments, there is no doubt that this performance can cost him in his competition with Iñaki Peña for the starting spot. But as he himself commented, Szczęsny needs to keep looking forward to ensuring he puts in better performances in the upcoming matches.
