Manchester United secured a comfortable 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday to give new head coach Ruben Amorim his first Premier League victory, and the result saw them move into ninth place in the table.
The Red Devils are now four points off the top-four, and while the fans will be dreaming of clinching one of the Champions League spots for next season, Gary Neville does not see that happening.
The former Man United captain is not confident of their chances of finishing in the top-six either, insisting his old club do not currently have what it takes to finish ahead of the teams currently above them.
“Obviously it was a good win [against Everton],” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“Coming back in midweek and winning, Ruben Amorim will be happy. They’re a long way off, no doubt about that, but they’ve gone up into the top half of the table.
“They’re only four or five points off the top four, which is mad really but I don’t think they’re quite at that level yet to give anybody confidence that they can get there.
“The teams that are above them, particularly in the top six are well ahead of them in terms of performance levels. But he’ll be happy at the end of his first week of matches.”
Man United are back in action on Wednesday with a trip to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal, and they will need to be on top of their game if they hope to leave with a result.
They host Nottingham Forest afterwards on Saturday before games against Viktoria Plzen and Manchester City, and Amorim will be desperate to get as many points as possible in those games.
Some of the players have had a new lease of life upon the departure of manager Erik ten Hag, but whether they sustain their current form heading into the second half of the campaign remains to be seen.
Man United will hope to end the season stronger than they started, but it will not come easy given the quality of the teams ahead of them in the table.
A top-six finish is still very much possible and Amorim will be desperate to get the job done and impress at the end of his first season in charge.
