‘I don’t see that’: Jurgen Klopp has ruled out huge signings for Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he doubts Kylian Mbappe, Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland will make huge transfers this summer.

Klopp has claimed the market will be ‘strange’ this summer and he does not forsee a flurry of business early on, nor does he think that there will be many big money deals taking place due to the financial situation.

This is in spite of Liverpool having been linked with Mbappe, Sancho and Haaland ahead of next season, with all three of those deals now appearing incredibly unlikely.

Speaking to the Independent, Klopp offered his thoughts on how the transfer window will go this summer. “Not playing Champions League doesn’t help obviously, but it’s not our biggest problem. The market will be really strange.

“I hear about really big money moves… is Kylian Mbappe going? Haaland? Sancho? I don’t see that happening a lot this summer because the football world is still not in the same place it was before.

“The situation is better than I would have thought a year ago but the financial situation is a year where everyone suffers. We will see how the market will develop but for sure it won’t be an early market.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

This will come as a blow to any Liverpool fans still holding out hope of seeing Sancho, Haaland or Mbappe in a Liverpool shirt next season. There is no one to blame, though, as it was impossible for anyone to predict a global pandemic draining funds from clubs across the world and causing teams to play without fans for over a year, with Liverpool reportedly suffering a huge financial blow as a result of the pandemic. Perhaps Liverpool are currently lining up a £200m bid for Mbappe in another timeline without Covid-19, but in the here and now it is simply not possible for the club – as Klopp explains – and they will need to do things differently this summer.

Instead, Liverpool could look for bargains in the market and attempt to make the most out of what they have. They have already started this by reportedly pursuing RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate. Liverpool are set to take advantage of the 21-year-old’s £30.5m release clause, having already agreed personal terms with the defender. This means that searching for free transfers, players with release clauses or players in devalued markets could be the way forward for Liverpool instead of huge marquee additions like Mbappe or Haaland.
