“I don’t agree”: Steve McManaman on topic relating to Gini Wijnaldum’s departure

During the 2021 summer transfer window, midfielder Gini Wijnaldum departed Liverpool and signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

Despite that being the case, Liverpool did not sign a replacement for the Dutchman during the recent transfer window.

However, former Red Steve McManaman has implied that Liverpool made the right call by not signing a midfielder ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

As quoted by Anfield Watch’s Twitter account, McManaman told the Mirror the following: “I don’t agree that Jurgen Klopp needed to sign a top-class midfielder just because Gini Wijnaldum left – Liverpool have tons of midfielders and they just need to step up.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

We completely agree with McManaman’s comments. Liverpool are not short of midfielders.

Jurgen Klopp has the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at his disposal.

On another note, it was a shame to see Wijnaldum depart Anfield earlier this summer. Liverpool signed the Dutchman for a transfer fee of €27.50 million back in the summer of 2016.

Wijnaldum was a fine servant for the club. The midfielder went on to make 237 appearances for Liverpool’s first-team.

But, player movement in football is inevitable. We wish Wijnaldum all the best for the future.
