In the EFL, it is the norm to see bright young talent from the Premier League loaned out to clubs in the second, third and fourth tier to aid their development.

That was the case this summer, when Everton elected to send Lewis Dobbin temporarily to Derby County.

Dobbin joined the Rams on a season long loan deal back in August and has gone on to appear 23 times for the club so far.

With that in mind, we asked one of our Rams fan pundits Liam Allwood for his thoughts on how Dobbin has got on so far.

“I’ve been really impressed with Lewis Dobbin,” Liam told FLW.

“He’s a young lad, he’s come here from Everton, he’s come here to learn and I think being under Paul Warne he’s going to learn a lot.

“He’s got the pace, he’s got the dribbling ability, it’s just that end game that he needs to work on, which Paul Warne has publicly stated.

“I know against Torquay he missed a good chance in the first half, however, he scored a rocket in the second half, potentially FA Cup goal of the season maybe, definitely a contender.

“All we can hope for now is him to get a bit of confidence from that which he has been lacking but now he’s got his goal, I do think like James Collins he’ll crack on.

“I do hope Everton don’t call him back, I don’t think they will and I don’t think they should. I think he’s doing well and he’ll do well for us this season.”

The verdict

I think it’s always hard to judge young attacking players, particularly when they are out on loan.

Naturally, attackers these days are often judged by their goals and assists, and if you look at Dobbin’s numbers so far this season, they don’t exactly blow you away.

But, by the sounds of what our fan pundit is saying, he is impressing in certain areas, and it is just that final product that really needs working on.

This is totally understandable though – if he was the finished product, he likely wouldn’t be out on loan at Derby this season.

The whole point of a loan deal is to learn and it sounds as though Paul Warne has already identified this as an area of growth for Dobbin.
