Sheffield United signed midfielder Tommy Doyle on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City in the summer.

This is not the first loan spell Doyle has had in the Championship, as he spent last season at Cardiff City, where he impressed many.

It was then expected that a loan move to United would be the next step in the player’s development and would help him more considering it is a team pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

However, the 21-year-old has struggled for regular minutes this season, being in and out of the lineup due to injuries.

The midfielder has managed to appear 19 times in the Championship, scoring one goal and providing two assists. The majority of his appearances, however, have come from the bench, with him only completing 90 minutes on two occasions.

It is unclear what the plan is heading into the summer and whether or not United will look to sign Doyle on a permanent basis.

Owain Wyse if the club should be looking to sign Tommy Doyle on a permanent deal in the summer.

He told FLW: “I really really like Tommy Doyle and if the opportunity is there to sign him I definitely would.

“I think he’s a very intelligent footballer in his positional sense and reading the game, he barely gives the ball away and helps to keep attacks flowing, he is also strong in the tackle. I think he is a really complete midfielder who will only get better, and I certainly would be trying to bring him in permanently.”

The Verdict

On his day, Doyle is a very good midfielder, especially in the Championship; however, he just hasn’t had the run of the green at Bramall Lane this season.

It is also unclear if Manchester City would even consider allowing Doyle to leave the club on a permanent basis, but when you consider all the talent they have, he may be one they are willing to sacrifice.

If United do get promoted to the Premier League, it will definitely strengthen their case for signing the midfielder.
