Rico Lewis says he couldn’t be happier with how things are going at City.
The 19-year-old has started the new season in sparkling form and has won praise for Pep Guardiola for his high quality displays in the seven games he has so far featured in.
And Lewis says he is loving learning from the very best as he continues his football education under Guardiola.
“To be in this environment so early is something you don’t expect to happen so soon and when it does happen, I am so appreciative but obviously something I want to keep,” said Lewis.
“That’s what you dream of when you are little, and you join the Academy.
“All you can think about is working your way up and getting into the first team. For me, I am very lucky and fortunate that it has happened.
“I couldn’t be any happier.
“Obviously it is amazing [being trusted by Pep]. In my opinion he is one of the best managers ever.
“For him to trust me and bring me into the squad is a different kind of feeling.
“I am so appreciative to him for giving me the opportunity because without that I would have no chance of showing my abilities.”
“His attention to detail and how obsessed he is to winning - I also like to win. I like to better myself in every way.
“If Pep sees a small detail that he can improve he doesn’t just leave it and not say anything, he will tell you and that is where you get better.”
Lewis has proven himself to be one of our most versatile players since becoming a first team member.
He has played at left-back, right-back, attacking midfield and as a holding midfielder – impressing each time in each position.
So, where does he enjoy playing the most?
“I think I am most effective in midfield in the small areas and tight spaces where we can draw players in and then give it to the attackers with more time and more space,” he said.
“With their quality that is where we can create the most chances.
“I just enjoy having control of the game, having the ball and just fully in control of the opponent.
“Obviously I had a chance in pre-season to play all of the games because some of the lads were away at the Euros and then needed a bit of a rest which was good for me.
“I got my fitness in quite early, and I think that put me in good stead for the season.
“So far, I have played more than I could have expected, and I am really happy. I just try and better myself every day, see what I do that is good and to try to improve that and see what I do that is bad and try to improve it. That is the best way for me to progress.”
And reflecting on the devastating news that Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season, Lewis added: ““I don’t think it is something we have necessarily talked about yet because obviously it is very new to us still.
“It is a very unfortunate situation, and we hope that Rodri comes back quick and stronger.
“We know we have multiple players with enough quality to fill in and carry on the good start to the season.”
