Manchester United have 10 minutes to find a breakthrough against Tottenham Hotspur or else risk overseeing their most camalitous season on all fronts.

Securing silverware and a Champions League spot via a victory in the Europa League final tonight would’ve glossed over a truly disastrous 10 months for the Red Devils, with Ruben Amorim unable to turn United’s fortunes around after Erik ten Hag was relieved of his duties.

Yet, the Red Devils – perhaps surprisingly – maintained an unbeaten record for the entirety of their Europa League campaign, although that means nothing if they can’t get over the line with a win in Bilbao tonight.

The opener on the night came courtesy of Brennan Johson in the 42nd minute, with closer inspection showing that Luke Shaw also helped the ball on its way in.

United have since floundered in their attempts to provide a response through Amorim’s chosen frontline of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Amad, with the latter undoubtedly offering more on the attack than either of his forward counterparts combined.

Alejandro Garnacho, after playing an integral role throughout the term, dropped to the bench for third successive game in a decision that did raise the eyebrows of some supporters due to the Argentine’s impressive record in finals; he scored the first goal in the FA Cup final last May and in the Community Shield, both of which came against Manchester City.

Amorim eventually opted to bring Garnacho into the action in the 71st minute, withdrawing Mason Mount in hopes of bringing some life to an otherwise dull display by the Reds.

When the youngster immediately livened up United’s attack, Darren Fletcher said on TNT Sports’ commentary: “I can’t believe he’s only just come on the pitch.”

“Neither can I,” Ally McCoist echoed. “You can see the difference. You’re getting someone in the wide area wanting to take the defender on and get a shot at goal.

“It’s the last thing [Pedro] Porro needs, somebody running at him for the last 15 mins, and it’s everything United need.”
