Transfer News: Ralf Rangnick wants Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek to stay at Manchester United

Ralf Rangnick has expressed that he wants Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek to stay at Manchester United past this January. Both of them have struggled to earn minutes this season and have subsequently been linked with moves elsewhere this transfer window.

The Englishman has played just two games this season, which goes to show the current plight that he is going through. He was initially touted to compete with David De Gea but the latter’s resurgence has pushed him down the pecking order. As a result, he is frustrated with the lack of game time and may be forced to deal with it for the rest of the term following the manager’s latest statement.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t ESPN), Rangnick has admitted to understanding the feelings of Henderson but is adamant that he wants him to stay this campaign for keeping the squad intact. He said:

“I can fully understand he wants to play. He’s at an age where you should regularly play but we are in three competitions and we need three goalkeepers right now. I can understand his desire to get regular game-time elsewhere in the Premier League.”

Henderson, Van de Beek to stay with Man Utd?

The German boss also delivered a verdict on Van de Beek, who has been linked to Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund. The manager mentioned that he had a conversation with the midfielder regarding the matter where he talked about wanting him to stay despite the lack of game time.

“It’s the same situation as it is with Dean. I had a conversation with him after training two weeks ago and advised him to stay. Louis van Gaal told him to be a regular starter he has to play for his team, but on the other hand, we have a lot of competition in our squad in those positions.”

We cannot really blame the Red Devils duo if they want to leave in the winter transfer window. Any footballer would want to keep getting regular minutes, especially considering the quality that the Man United duo possesses. But it would help us if the club could keep hold of them as it is never good to have your squad get trimmed during a campaign.

We could see the Dutchman gain more prominence in the coming days following his excellent short stint in the 1-0 win against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. The 63-year-old coach tweaked the formation to make it a diamond to help the central midfielder, and as a result of that, we gained more control compared to the period before his substitution.

The 24-year-old keeper could have it tough since we are already out of the Carabao Cup and he did not even make the starting XI for the FA Cup tie against Villa. Supposedly he had a clash with the boss after the latter decided to start De Gea for the match, dealing a further blow to the England international.

The Man United manager would now have to manage his squad as keeping them happy would only benefit us during the rest of the season. The second choice keeper and the 24-year-old midfielder would need to be given ample game time so that they can be match-fresh when we do end up needing their services.

Their situation was similar under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but it is perhaps the continuation of that scenario under Rangnick that would have added to their frustrations. Only time will tell where they end up come February but if our manager’s comments are anything to go by, it would perhaps be at Old Trafford.
