Carlton Palmer has revealed his thoughts on what Huddersfield Town should do in the summer, as they approach a near certain relegation to League One.

Andre Breitenreiter had a decent-ish start to life in Yorkshire, but the side haven't been able to pick up any momentum since their draw at home to Leeds United, and, unless a miracle occurs on the final day of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, the Terriers will finish in the bottom three.

They barely avoided the drop last season under Neil Warnock, and the side didn't start the season too badly under him. But the club made the decision to make a switch and appoint former Sheffield Wednesday, and current Port Vale, boss Darren Moore.

That choice didn't pan out very well, and he was replaced by the German boss in February.

Not much has gone right at the John Smith's Stadium this season, and it's all led to the final day of the season: a trip to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town who will be looking to win promotion.

Palmer, a former England midfielder, has reflected on what has gone wrong for the Terriers this season, and what they should look to do going forward.

Carlton Palmer verdict on Huddersfield's 23/24 season

Speaking to Football League World, the pundit revealed that he believes the decision to get rid of Warnock was the wrong one, and that they need to make a decision on who is the person to lead us forward, and have some form of continuity in the dugout.

He said: "It's been a difficult season for Huddersfield. It's gone from bad to worse. They replaced Warnock, who had done a magnificent job of keeping them up, with Moore, and his time wasn't as successful as the Huddersfield hierarchy would have liked.

"But, at the end of the day, they still made the change to bring in Breitenreiter, and they're going to probably finish the season three or four points short.

"They've had three managers this season, and we all know that continuity breeds success. Birmingham City have paid every price for getting rid of John Eustace because they're staring down the relegation barrel too.

"Huddersfield changed manager. The results weren't going great, I understand that, but they said that they brought him in for a long-term vision, and then they changed the boss.

"Is it the players, or is it the manager? The truth of the matter is that Warnock was getting a tune out of them. This season it's been very disappointing. "They've had too many draws this season that have cost them really dearly. They've had something like 18 draws. If you look at the teams down the bottom of the table, they're at 11 or 12 draws. Rotherham United, who have been relegated, have only got a dozen draws. "It's been really disappointing for them, and the question is now do they stick with Breitenreiter?

"They've got to work out whether he could have done better, whether it was an issue of not having enough quality, and whether they feel they can get promoted from League One with him.

"I believe in continuity, I don't believe in changing the manager all the time, because it's not just the manager's fault. We'll have to wait and see, but I believe that he should maybe be given the opportunity to have the summer.

"Moore came in and didn't have a transfer window and things were very difficult. I think that if you've decided to go down a certain route, then you should see it out. They didn't with Darren or Neil and it's cost them dearly."

Huddersfield must massively regret Neil Warnock decision

By the former Terriers manager's own admission, he would have stayed on much longer than he did. He said, following the announcement of his departure, that he would have stayed with Huddersfield until around Christmas, and not September, had he had the choice.

This scenario would have given the veteran manager the chance to steady the ship, and more time for Huddersfield to prepare who was going to take over from him.

Instead they went early with the decision to get Moore, who has been relegated with Port Vale this season too, and it's all gone downhill from there.

Huddersfield probably wouldn't have been in their current position if they had let the 75-year-old stick around for a bit longer, and the higher-ups must be ruing their decision.
