It’s been an eventful few days for Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simón. First, he renewed his contract with the club only a matter of days ago, keeping him there through 2029, and now he has culminated his season by winning a prestigious award in La Liga.

The award in question is the Zamora trophy, awarded by Marca, and given to the goalkeeper who has the lowest ‘goals-to-games’ ratio each season. The award gets its name from legendary goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora, who played for Espanyol, Barcelona and Madrid in a career between 1916 and 1938.

Simón gave his reaction to the win, saying to Marca: “It has been a very nice week with everything that has happened. This award is thanks to all the colleagues and day-to-day work of all of us who work in Lezama. I am the face of this award, but behind it there is a huge group that has worked very hard for it.”

Unai Simón won the trophy with 33 goals conceded in 36 games, in a season which saw Athletic Club finish in 5th place and qualify for next season’s Europa League.

The season’s highlight for Bilbao came outside of the league however, as they won the Copa del Rey, their first major trophy in 40 years.

Unai Simón’s win dethrones Marc-André ter Stegen, who won the trophy last year.

Simón won’t have too long to celebrate his win, as he will soon be heading out to Germany to be Spain’s starting goalkeeper at Euro 2024, all being well.
