Ipswich Town beat Southampton in five-goal thriller

The importance of the game was obvious, as the Tractor Boys know they need to maintain this winning run if they are to see off Leicester City and Leeds, whilst this was arguably Saints’ last chance to stay in the hunt for a top two finish.

A Leif Davis strike had put the hosts ahead, but Che Adams equalised within a minute, before Adam Armstrong made it 2-1 to the visitors.

That was totally deserved, as Southampton controlled play for large parts. Yet, the spirit and togetherness of Ipswich meant they were never out of it, and Nathan Broadhead got them back on level terms.

James Bree would be sent off late on as the game became stretched, and Jeremy Sarmiento would win it for Ipswich in the 97th minute, sparking wild scenes around the ground.

Wes Burns reacts to Leif Davis message

Leif Davis plays key role for Ipswich Town

Davis has been outstanding for Ipswich since he joined the club, as he was integral to their promotion last season.

But, he has kicked on again in the second tier, with his brilliant left-foot such an asset to the team, both from open play and set-pieces.

The 24-year-old did struggle at times defensively against Saints, but was once again in a position to make telling contributions in the final third, starting with his powerful strike that put the Suffolk outfit ahead.

Then, deep into stoppage time, he had the composure and quality to find Sarmiento, who prodded home at the second attempt for the winner.

So, Burns’ love for Davis will no doubt be shared by all Ipswich fans, and he will continue to have an important role for the side if they are to make it back-to-back promotions.

Ipswich Town’s promotion chances

You get the feeling that this is going to go down to the wire, but, right now, Ipswich have their destiny in their own hands, and their rivals would swap positions with them immediately if it was possible, including Leicester, as you would rather have points on the board than a game in hand.

But, Ipswich are coming up against two formidable squads at this level, so they will need to be near faultless if they are to get the job done in the final six games.

Nevertheless, the manner of the win against Southampton epitomised what this team is about, and there’s something special happening at Portman Road.

Next up, McKenna’s side make the trip to bitter rivals Norwich City, in what is a huge East Anglian derby for both clubs.
