Hutton ‘very surprised’ by what’s happened to Zungu at Rangers
Alan Hutton has admitted he was shocked to hear Bongani Zungu named as one of the ‘Party Five’ at Rangers last week.
The former Gers defender and lifelong fan at Ibrox, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted while he expected younger players to fall foul of the lockdown rules, he would never have expected the 28-year-old midfielder to be so “silly”.
Steven Gerrard revealed the names of the five miscreants – Zungu, Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey, Dapo Mebude and Brian Kinnear.
Football Insider revealed internal discussions about suspending the quintet for the rest of the season, although no decision has been made.
With South Africa international Zungu currently on loan from Amiens, Steven Gerrard all but confirmed his hopes of securing a permanent move to Ibrox were dead in the water.
Hutton admitted he could not quite believe it when the midfielder was named among the rule-breakers and insisted it was a sad way for his brief Rangers career to come to an end.
Speaking about Zungu, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “I’m very surprised, if I’m honest, for a guy who has got the experience as an international player to get dragged into something so silly.
“Let’s not kid ourselves on; his Rangers career was always on the line because it was with a view to a permanent signing and I don’t think he’s really set the heather alight.
“I know he’s been in and out and he’s not really been given an opportunity but what we have seen of him, it’s not been at the quality that I think Rangers’ standards are at the moment.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve obviously seen the last of him.
“It is a shame because it’s coming to an end in this way, you’d rather it be through football reasons, rather than off-the-pitch reasons but look, for someone of his experience to fall into that trap is just really poor.”
