Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has backed Danny Welbeck for an England recall after the forward’s brilliant winner at Newcastle.
Welbeck scored the decisive goal in extra time as Brighton beat Newcastle to progress into the FA Cup quarter-finals. The 34-year-old’s goal was his eighth of the campaign for the Seagulls in all competitions, the best return of his five seasons at The Amex Stadium.
His impressive form saw Hurzeler asked whether Welbeck could earn an England recall, ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s first squad announcement this month. Welbeck has scored 16 goals in 42 appearances for England but has not been capped since 2018.
“It might be possible, but it is not my decision,” Hurzeler said to ITV at full-time.
“The only thing I can say is I am happy to work with him, he is a great leader, great role model and a great player.”
Welbeck was delighted to impact the clash, with the ex-Sunderland striker having also netted the winner when Brighton won at Newcastle in the Premier League earlier this season.
“It is nice to come here to St James’ Park, such a special atmosphere. The fans made it an amazing atmosphere – great to get the winner, again.
“I feel like we played well. We know when we come up against Newcastle that it’s going to be an intense game. They have some dangerous players with some great ability, and we have to match that, and we did that today and come out on top.
“When you’re on the bench you have to analyse the game and see where you can make a difference and today that’s what we did. You see Joao Pedro at the end struggling to run. He gave so much and I believe that’s what gave us the winner.”
