Hungary vs Switzerland Latest Prediction

Both sides will be happy with their group draw for Euro 2024. Yes, playing a hosting Germany is never going to be easy, but each of Hungary, Switzerland and Scotland will all see each other as beatable, offering a great chance of finishing either second or as one of the best third-place teams. Even the Germans themselves haven’t been invincible in recent tournaments, with the host crowd perhaps a little worried about their own chances of progression.

Hungary have been in immense form over the past couple of years, going unbeaten in their last 14 games across all competitions with their last defeat coming against Italy way back in September 2022. Dominik Szoboszlai offers serious pedigree in the midfield, but the supporting cast including Daniel Gazdag, Milos Kerkez and Attila Szalai is not short on quality or dynamism. And as always, a ferocious away support will be cheering them on.

Switzerland have been less convincing in recent times, with their 1-0 friendly win against the Republic of Ireland last time out their first victory since a 3-0 over Andorra in September 2023. However, they have some serious quality in the likes of Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabian Schar. What’s more, it’s only a quick hop over the German border for many of the Swiss fans, so they’ll be well supported throughout this competition.

The second match of Euro 2024 takes place at the RheinEnergieSTADION in Köln on June 15.

Hungary went unbeaten during qualifying for the tournament, finishing above the likes of Serbia and Montenegro on 18 points from eight games. Switzerland had to battle a little harder, finishing second to Romania in their group on 17 points from 10 games. They only lost once, but won just one of their last seven matches, with that victory coming against an Andorra side ranked 164th in the world.

Hungary Latest Team News

Hungary will undoubtedly lean on their midfield quality at Euro 2024, with Liverpool’s Szoboszlai the man to make them tick. However, don’t discount the supporting cast with Barnabas Varga scoring four goals during qualifying, while MLS stars Daniel Gazdag (Philadelphia Union) and Daniel Salloi (Sporting KC) can be potent attacking threats.

The Hungarians also have a solid defensive base with the likes of Peter Gulacsi and Willi Orban of RB Leipzig. That explains their record of just seven goals conceded from eight qualifying matches, while they have kept a clean sheet in their last two fixtures.

Switzerland Latest Team News

On paper, Switzerland look even more dangerous with the likes of Shaqiri, Zhaka, Schar and Manuel Akanji within their ranks. With those names, the ‘darkhorse’ tag would feel quite apt.

However, goals have been a problem with the Swiss scoring just three goals in their last five matches, while Xhaka (14) and Shaqiri (30) are the only players from their latest squad with more than nine international goals to their name.

Switzerland kicked off qualification with back-to-back wins over Belarus and Israel by an 8-0 combined scoreline, but in their remaining eight matches, their only victories came against Andorra. There are clearly a few malfunctions for head coach Murat Yakin to fix, but the quality is there to do so.
