Ivan Juric surprisingly dropped Mats Hummels for a Europa League game against Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday and according to Corriere dello Sport, the German centre-back is ready to leave the capital in January.

Roma defender Hummels could leave the club in the January transfer window, according to the latest report from Corriere dello Sport.

The 2014 Germany World Cup winner was expected to replace the unavailable Evan N’dicka against Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday, but Juric surprisingly picked Bryan Cristante instead, adapting the Italian midfielder to a centre-back role.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Juric’s announcement in the dressing room ‘shocked’ the players, who even thought they had misunderstood their coach.

Juric had said last week that he saw Hummels as a backup to N’dicka, but the ex-Borussia Dortmund star remained on the bench yesterday despite his teammate’s unavailability.

“It is a technical decision. I always think of fielding the team with the best chance to win. It is a technical decision for tonight,” Juric explained last night.

Hummels joined Roma on a free transfer in September, signing a €2.5m-a-year contract until the end of the season.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 35-year-old is already tempted to leave the club in the January transfer window as he has a few options in the Bundesliga.

However, it remains to be seen what will happen with Juric as the international break approaches. The Giallorossi have only won four games from 11 under his guidance, meaning that the coach’s future remains highly uncertain.
