Hull City are pushing for promotion to the Premier League after seven years away.

Liam Rosenior’s side are currently sitting in tenth position, and are eight points off the play-off places with seven games left to play.

Rosenior has been backed by owner Alun Ilcali in both the summer and January transfer windows, bringing in the likes of Fabio Carvalho, Anass Zaroury and Liam Delap.

But since their relegation all the way back in 2017, the Tigers have failed to come anywhere near the top six, even spending one season in League One.

With poor seasons come players who have also done poorly, and there are many signings that have failed at the club in recent seasons.

Some of those players remain at the club, and Hull will want to move these players on at the end of the season - an example of this is Ryan Woods.

Woods’ career on a decline when he joined Hull

Woods’ career started off at Shrewsbury Town, where he was adored by the fans who dubbed him ‘the ginger Pirlo’.

After leaving Shropshire, he moved to Brentford, where he would spend three years, winning various club awards during his time in London.

The midfielder made a £7m move to Stoke City in 2019. This move would be the start of the decline for Woods.

After 39 appearances in two seasons, he would spend a mixed season on loan with Millwall, before leaving permanently for Birmingham City in 2021.

Hull would then sign Woods in the summer of 2022 for an undisclosed fee, where it has been another poor spell in his career.

Last season he only started 16 games, appearing in 28 in the league in total. Rosenior then said that Woods was not part of his plans, which led to him joining Bristol Rovers on loan. After a poor first half of the season with the Gas, he is now with Exeter City until the end of the season.

Hull will surely be looking to move Woods on in the summer

Overall, Woods’ move to Hull has been a massive disappointment.

His loan move away to Bristol Rovers was a bad one, but Woods has picked up his form at Exeter.

As Rosenior said, as long as he is in charge, Woods does not look like he will feature again for the club. If Hull are promoted to the Premier League, there will be no way back into the team for Woods.

A permanent departure will be likely. Woods has a year left on his deal, so it will probably take a fee or some sort of financial agreement involving his wages.

But at Exeter, he has shown he can still cut it at League One level, and at the age of 30, he still has plenty of years left at a good level before he starts to plateau. It just feels unlikely that it's going to be at the MKM.
