Don Goodman believes Aston Villa are unlikely to pursue a move for Jaden Philogene during the upcoming transfer window.

The Hull City forward has performed well in the Championship this year after making the switch from Villa Park in the summer.

He has impressed many with his performances at the MKM Stadium this season, leading to speculation over his future.

The likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have both been linked with a move for the forward.

However, Villa also hold a buy-back clause in the deal with Hull that can be triggered if the two clubs are in the same division.

Goodman makes Philogene transfer claim

Goodman has claimed that it is unlikely Aston Villa will make a move to re-sign Philogene from Hull.

He believes the deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough last January has ended any chance of the 22-year-old returning to Villa Park anytime soon.

“If they hadn’t have bought Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough then perhaps they would have moved for Philogene,” said Goodman, via Aston Villa News.

“But right now I don’t think there’s room in their squad for a Jaden Philogene.

“I saw him live the other evening and he’s a player I absolutely love.

“He has all the ability in the world, although at the same time he does still need to give you more, particularly when his side don’t have the ball.

“At Premier League level, if you switch off when you don’t have the ball then you are completely and utterly punished.

“So I don’t envisage Aston Villa paying £15m at this point to take him back to the football club, albeit he could go on to have an incredible career.

“I just don’t think at this point it’s the way Aston Villa want to go.”

Jaden Philogene transfer value

Philogene signed for Hull last summer in a deal worth a reported £5 million, and has become a crucial part of Liam Rosenior’s first team squad.

The youngster has contributed nine goals and six assists from 26 appearances in the Championship (all stats from Fbref).

He will be key to the team’s pursuit of a play-off place in the final weeks of the season, before any decision is made over his future.

Promotion to the Premier League could go a long way to keeping him at the MKM Stadium, provided it doesn’t lead to Villa triggering his buy-back clause.

The Tigers are ninth in the Championship table, six points adrift of the top six but with a game in hand over their rivals.

Villa’s lack of Philogene interest will be key for Hull

The buy-back clause is reportedly worth £15 million, which would be a tidy profit for Hull after just one season, if triggered.

However, owner Acun Ilicai has indicated that he is planning to set a €30 (£25.7) million asking price for the forward if the clause isn’t triggered.

So it could be quite lucrative for Hull if Villa don’t show an interest in Philogene this summer.

Without Villa involved in the speculation over his future, Hull can take much greater control over the situation and command a much higher fee as a result.
