Hull City forward Tyler Smith is currently in talks with League One outfit Oxford United ahead of a potential loan move for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, according to Alan Nixon.

U’s boss Karl Robinson has already added Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Ateef Konate to his ranks late on in the transfer window, and now he wants to bring Smith in as a central striking option.

Smith joined the Tigers in the summer of 2021 from Sheffield United, but he scored just twice in his debut season in East Riding of Yorkshire in 24 appearances.

The 24-year-old has appeared in Hull’s last eight league matches in a variety of positions and notched twice in a 4-1 success on the road against Wigan Athletic, but he is behind Oscar Estupinan, Aaron Connolly and Benjamin Tetteh in the pecking order at the MKM Stadium.

Head coach Liam Rosenior is now willing to sanction a loan departure for Smith before tomorrow night’s deadline and a move to Oxford is most likely, unless other suitors come in for his services ahead of 11pm on Tuesday.

The Verdict

It’s really unlikely that Smith will ever make a regular goalscorer at Championship level, so a loan, or even permanent exit from Hull, would be the best move for his career.

There are plenty of options ahead of him at the Tigers right now and if he remains at the club for the rest of the season, then the chances are he will barely see the pitch.

Oxford don’t have too many out and out centre-forward options at their disposal, and they have also been very inconsistent in-front of goal as well this season, so there’s a lot of sense in an approach for Smith.

Should the U’s get a deal over the line, then he should add something extra to Robinson’s attack for the final few months of the campaign.
