Hull City looked at the possibility of appointing Slaven Bilic before the Croatian secured his move to Watford, according to a report from Hull Live.

The 54-year-old was on the Tigers’ radar following their 3-0 loss against Swansea City before the international break, when he was still out of work and looking to get back into the managerial game.

However, owner Acun Ilicali faced disruption during the interval with the Turkish businessman being involved in a road traffic collision in Istanbul, requiring surgery as he was forced to spend time away from matters at the MKM Stadium.

With this and previous reports suggesting that Shota Arveladze was going to be given another chance to prove himself, it looked as though he would be leading the East Yorkshire outfit into battle with Luton Town.

But it was revealed yesterday morning that he had been sacked – and the Tigers are now on the prowl for his successor as they look to climb up the table – though it’s currently unclear whether they will be able to appoint anyone in time for their midweek game against Wigan Athletic.

And it before they even decided to relieve him of his duties, with Bilic previously on their list of candidates before he finalised his move to Vicarage Road earlier this week.

The Verdict:

Considering the CV he has, Bilic would have been an excellent appointment for the club, even if he does only have one season of experience in the second tier.

Previously managing West Ham, he has coped with a considerable amount of pressure before and thrived in that environment, making him a potentially suitable candidate for the top job at the MKM Stadium.

It may have taken time for him to embed his philosophy in Yorkshire – but it would have had a good chance of paying off in the long term and that can only bode well for the Tigers who will want to get back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

If he did manage to get them back to the top tier, he can count on his previous time there to guide him and would probably have had the chance to bring in some world class players considering how much Ilicali seems to be willing to spend.

Working with the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic during his time with the Croatia national team, the recruitment of top-quality individuals wouldn’t have fazed him and that will help him at Vicarage Road as he prepares to take charge of Joao Pedro and Ismaila Sarr.
