Selles has kept the Tigers in the Championship, but his job at the MKM Stadium doesn't appear to be safe...

Ruben Selles' job as Hull City head coach has been plunged into doubt, with claims that there is still a decision to be made on his future in East Yorkshire.

The Tigers' Championship status was confirmed for the 2025-26 season on Saturday, with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park enough to see them over the line, with Luton's 5-3 defeat at West Brom helping them out massively.

Selles was impassioned after the final whistle in-front of the travelling City faithful, having had a tough job to do since moving to the club from Reading back in December, but will he be in charge for the first game of next season?

Hull City reportedly considering Ruben Selles change

According to BBC Radio Humberside's Mike White, Hull owner Acun Ilicali is considering Selles' position as the boss of the club following their 21st-placed finish in the Championship standings.

White added that he'd be more surprised if Selles WAS in charge of Hull next season than if he wasn't, which indicates that Turkish media mogul Ilicali could be set to sack yet another manager, having parted company with Tim Walter earlier on in the season, as well as Liam Rosenior at the end of 2023-24.

Selles signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the MKM Stadium in late 2024, taking him up until 2027 with the option to extend it by a further year, but Ilicali is now mulling over whether to part ways with the Spaniard in order for the club to go in a different direction.

Acun Ilicali may rile Hull City fanbase if Ruben Selles is sacked

When Ilicali arrived at Hull, he initially brought fresh optimism, investment and excitement to the club, and you cannot say he hasn't backed managers with transfers and the like.

However, his decision to part ways with Liam Rosenior after missing out on the play-offs last season does not look good now in hindsight, especially with how well he is doing out in France with Strasbourg, and since then, Hull have struggled under Tim Walter and then Selles.

Selling two key players in Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves last summer didn't help matters, but they wanted Premier League football and were sold for good prices - season-ending injuries to the likes of Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi never helped matters either.

Selles though appears to have created a bit of a rapport with the fanbase, and he surely deserves to get the summer to build his own squad - if that opportunity is taken away from him, then there may be some genuine backlash from sections of supporters at Hull over the way they are being run from Turkey.
