Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is out of action for the next six to eight weeks, according to The Telegraph.
The former France international suffered a knee injury in Tottenham’s recent Premier League victory over reigning champions Manchester City.
However, he will not need surgery to repair the damaged ligaments. It was feared he would miss the rest of the season, but he will only need some time to recover from the injury.
The news is a massive blow for manager Antonio Conte, who is also out of action after undergoing gallbladder surgery. Assistant manager Cristian Stellini led the team against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Despite a drop in levels this season, Lloris is still a crucial component for Spurs. He is the team’s first-choice goalkeeper and captain.
Lloris will likely miss both legs of Tottenham’s round of 16 Champions League tie against AC Milan. The 36-year-old will also miss two London derbies against Chelsea and West Ham United later this month.
Former Celtic and Southampton shot-stopper Fraser Forster will deputise for Lloris between the sticks.
The experienced keeper has made over 130 Premier League appearances, so he will not look out of place in the coming games.
Brandon Austin or Alfie Whiteman will take the spot on the bench.
Lloris’ injury will only heighten the club’s need to buy a goalkeeper. It is reportedly one of their top priorities going into the summer transfer window.
They have lined up Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Brentford’s David Raya and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez as potential targets.
Raya is reportedly the top candidate on the shortlist to replace Lloris as Tottenham’s number one.
