Hugo Cuypers set for shock deadline day move to the MLS

According to RTBF, Gent are set to lose their star striker Hugo Cuypers today. The Belgian striker is on his way to the United States to undergo a medical with MLS side Chicago Fire. Reports are suggesting that the fee could be in the region of €11m with bonuses, making Cuypers one of the most expensive transfers in MLS history.

This would mean Gent have made a large amount of money from outgoing transfers in January, with both Gift Orban and Malick Fofana going for double digit fees to Lyon. However, it will also leave them incredibly light up front. The 26-year-old has scored six goals in 20 Pro League games this season, with a further three goals in five Europa Conference League matches. Last season he scored an impressive 27 league goals in 39 games for Gent, his first season at the club since joining from KV Mechelen.

If Cuypers is to leave, Gent will have to move quickly to find a replacement. Their only recognised strikers will be Tarik Tissoudali and a 35-year-old Laurent Depoitre.
