Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has said that the situation involving Osaze Urhoghide at the club is disappointing, during an exclusive interview with Football League World.

The young defender is said to have rejected the club’s offer of a new contract amidst interest in his services from elsewhere and as a result he now appears likely to leave Hillsborough for pastures new at the end of June.

Originally bought in on a free transfer from AFC Wimbledon, the 20-year-old has gone on to become an important member of the current first team in Yorkshire and is capable of playing at both the heart of defence and at right back.

With the youngster now seemingly set to bid a farewell to Wednesday and move on to a club higher up the pyramid, the League One outfit are left with a familiar sense of deja vu after also seeing Liam Shaw depart for Celtic in more recent times under the same set of circumstances.

Speaking to FLW, Palmer was quick to express his disappointment on the whole situation involving Urhoghide:

“You’re talking about a young player with a bright future, who now looks set to leave the club, I mean, how many times is this going to happen to Sheffield Wednesday?

“He can potentially leave for virtually nothing, so it’s hugely disappointing that he’s turned down the contract. It’s alright moving to another football club if you’re going to get a bigger salary.

“He’s going to have clubs that will be interested in him and I just hope he moves to play. You know, because he’s not played a lot of football and you only get experience and learn by playing regularly.

“The likelihood is that he’s going to move on and maybe he’ll go to a Championship club where he might get regular first team football.”
