Huge new FIFA plans put Chelsea’s club loan strategy in jeopardy

Chelsea’s club policy of buying young talents, loaning them out to develop and then selling on the ones they don’t need has been a brilliant strategy for them over the last ten or so years.

Financial Fair Play and owner Roman Abramovich’s desire to see the club break even meant that the days of big spending every summer are gone, and even Romelu Lukaku’s near £100m arrival this summer was paid for in large part by former loanees being sold off.

This may all soon come to an end though, with the news that FIFA are planning to limit clubs to just 6 outgoing loan players over the age of 21 for 2024.

There will be a gradually decrease in the number allowed, starting from this summer, if plans go ahead.

Chelsea will still be able to send out their kids to develop elsewhere, but we will no longer have a situation where ten or so Tiemoue Bakayoko type players are being sent on endless trips around Europe and getting their contract extended well into their mid 30s just because we can’t find a buyer.
