Heading into the game, it was imperative that Regis Le Bris' side picked up a win with recent results seeing the top three somewhat distance themselves from the Black Cats.

Luckily, they did just that with goals from Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda cancelling out Sheffield United's equaliser.

In truth, it was a spirited and resilient display from Sunderland, who weathered sustained pressure from Chris Wilder's side for much of the second half after a bright first-half performance.

This puts Le Bris' side right back in the mix with Leeds United and Burnley also dropping points on New Year's Day with their respective draws against Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.

While Anthony Patterson and Mayenda were undoubtedly the standouts of the win, it was another strong display from Bellingham who toughed it out against one of the best midfields in the division.

Testament to this were his underlying statistics, as he completed 11 clearances, made seven recoveries, and won six of his eight aerial duels over the 90 minutes.

The victory prompted him to take to social media and in an Instagram story he said: "Happy New Year Mackems. Huge 3 points, onto the next one...".

It certainly was a huge three points and Bellingham will be looking to have a heavy influence on his side again this Sunday as they take on John Mousinho's Portsmouth.

Pompey have been in much better form recently and Sunderland will have to be wary of their major threats if they are to take another three points in this season's entertaining promotion race.

Sunderland's big 2025

Wednesday represented the first day of 2025, and it couldn't have got off to a much better start than seeing off the Blades 2-1.

Tinkering with his formation, Le Bris was able to get more out of his attacking players, and he will be hopeful that this can continue for the foreseeable future.

Comfortably positioned in the play-offs, the goal must now be to close the gap on the top three, especially as teams like Burnley and the Blades have struggled to find the net in recent weeks.

If they can close this narrow gap and remain in contention by April, the Black Cats could realistically stake a claim for automatic promotion. But, right now, it has to be about stringing wins together, just like they were doing in the early stages of the season.
