Manchester United, under the stewardship of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is poised to implement a significant reduction in their workforce as part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and return to profitability. With a declared intention to make up to 200 positions redundant, the move marks a continued effort to enhance financial stability and operational efficiency.
This announcement follows a previous reduction last year where about 250 employees were let go. United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, outlined that the forthcoming cuts are essential components of a “transformation plan” aimed at reversing the financial downturn the club has faced. A club statement highlighted, “The transformation plan aims to return the club to profitability after five consecutive years of losses since 2019.” It is a clear indicator that the club’s leadership is taking decisive action to stem the financial bleed.
The redundancies, expected to affect between 150-200 roles, will undergo a thorough consultation process over the next three to four months. This drastic reduction represents a significant portion of the workforce, approximately 39%, based on the club’s employee count as of June 2024.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s influence has been pivotal since acquiring a 29% stake in Manchester United. The club’s financial records reveal a loss of £27.7 million in their recent quarterly results, with total losses surpassing £300 million over the past three years. These figures paint a stark picture of the financial challenges Ratcliffe inherited and the tough decisions he’s had to make to realign the club’s fiscal trajectory.
United’s current position in the league is another concern, with the team languishing at 15th in the Premier League standings. The club’s statement added that the restructuring will “improve the club’s financial sustainability and enhance operational efficiency.” This, in turn, is intended to provide a sturdier financial platform to support success across men’s and women’s football and infrastructural improvements.
Berrada remarked, “We have a responsibility to put Manchester United in the strongest position to win across our men’s, women’s and academy teams. These hard choices are necessary to put the club back on a stable financial footing.”
The transformation will also involve operational adjustments, such as relocating some staff from Old Trafford to the Carrington training base and maintaining a reduced presence in London, while consolidating leadership in Manchester. Marc Armstrong’s appointment as the chief business officer is part of these sweeping changes aimed at reinforcing the club’s business operations.
Cost-cutting extends to everyday operations, with the club set to save over £1 million annually by discontinuing free lunches at Old Trafford. However, commitments like the annual donation to the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association remain unchanged, indicating a balanced approach to financial cuts.
Despite the immediate financial constraints, the long-term focus remains on laying down robust foundations for future success, both on and off the pitch. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision involves hard but essential decisions to streamline operations and optimise resources.
