Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo returned to grass training earlier on Monday, a major boost for Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim. The Red Devils, unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions, will be significantly strengthened when the duo is fit to feature.
According to reports from Sully, both players have made strong progress in their rehabilitation after recovering from injuries. However, it is still too soon for either Mainoo or Maguire to return to the matchday squad. Their injuries also ruled them out of England’s first squad selection under new manager Thomas Tuchel for the World Cup qualifiers.
Among the two, Maguire is expected to return sooner. The 32-year-old has missed four matches so far due to his latest injury, having already been sidelined for a combined 10 games earlier this season for club and country. The former skipper leads Manchester United in interceptions and clearances per 90 minutes by a significant margin, highlighting his defensive importance.
Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo has missed eight matches with his current muscle injury. Manchester United fans will be eager to see the youngster back in action, especially amid reports of him considering a move abroad due to stalled contract talks. Mainoo had also missed a few games in October and November due to injury. The midfielder, who enjoyed a brilliant debut full-season in 2023-24, will be determined to get back to his best and finish the season strongly.
There was further positive news regarding player fitness for the Red Devils, as both Luke Shaw and Mason Mount were involved in training on Monday.
Despite their strong recent form, Manchester United remains 13th in the Premier League table. However, they have secured a place in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. In the first leg, they will visit French club Lyon on April 10. Up next for them is a challenging away fixture against third-placed Nottingham Forest.
