The final exploded into life when Palmeiras took the lead after just five minutes. A well worked move down the right ended with a cut-back to Raphael Veiga arriving late into the box, and he tucked it away into the bottom corner for 1-0.

Flamengo were then forced into a first half substitution when Filipe Luis went off injured and was replaced by RenĂŞ.

Palmeiras almost doubled their lead early in the second half when Rony unleashed a curling effort towards the top corner, but Flamengo goalkeeper Diego Alves made a fine save to keep it out.

It was then Flamengo’s turn to go close when a free-kick into the box found David Luiz unmarked at the back post, but Wéverton saved to deny the defender from a tight angle.

The Flamengo equaliser did come in the 72nd minute, when Gabigol fired in at the near post having been slipped through by Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

Flamengo then went close to a winner in the 86th minute when substitute Michael found himself in behind the Palmeiras defence, but he could only shoot across goal and wide.

It remained 1-1 after 90 minutes and the final went to extra-time.

Then, just five minutes into the extra period, Palmeiras went back in front when Deyverson caught Andreas Pereira in possession before running through to score.

Palmeiras are champions of South America for the third time in their history and they lift the trophy for the second time this calendar year, having previously overcome Santos in the delayed 2020 final back in January.
