Huddersfield Town head coach, Carlos Corberan, has hit out at the European Super League structure, claiming that in any walk of life there should be reward and consequence for your performance.

The footballing world has been in disarray over the last 48 hours, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal signing up to a breakaway competition that axed the very art of competition and laid a heavy focus on greed.

Fans at Leeds United’s clash with Liverpool on Monday night protested, as did Chelsea supporters ahead of last night’s meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge.

In the middle of both fixtures, managers and head coaches up and down the country were quizzed on the proposed Super League, including Corberan.

He delivered a passionate statement, which included his thoughts on why equality is needed in all walks of life, even football.

Corberan explained to yesterday’s press conference: “In life I don’t understand and I don’t like anything that doesn’t depend on merit. If you are working very well, you need to have a reward. If you are not working properly, you need to have a consequence.

“For me, this is the spirit of life, it is what makes everyone equal. It is not about where you were born, the money of your family. If you have a lot of determination and you work very hard, you can get the same things as anyone in the world.

“Everything depends on merit. Football has to be exactly the same.”

Following last night’s events, the six Premier League sides that were included in the 12-team Super League breakaway have all backtracked on their involvement, as the footballing world awaits the next steps.

In terms of Corberan’s focus, that’s fully on this evening’s clash with Barnsley in the Sky Bet Championship.

Huddersfield are looking to build on Saturday’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest and take another huge step to safety.
